Brenda Knuckles had a dream several years ago to own her own floral shop; although she never believed it would be a reality. Now she owns the oldest floral shop in Gainesville; Jackson’s Floral Traditions.
Jackson’s Floral began in 1887 and has been several other names over the years from Jackson’s Florist to Jackson’s Flowerland.
I actually had stayed home with my kids for their entire childhood. And so then when I got older I was like, ‘What do I want to do when I grow up?'” she said. “I walked into a local flower shop that I knew was hiring and said, ‘will you teach an old dog new tricks?'”
The floral shop took Brenda on and taught her floral design and she realized very quickly that she loved it!
“When we moved to Georgia…I started my own little flower business and did weddings,” Brenda said. “There was a funeral home that had done basically a free funeral for a family that had a child that passed away and I took care of the flowers for casket. I couldn’t get to a wholesale shop that day and I happened to walk into Jackson’s to buy flowers for the funeral.”
Not too long after Brenda began working at Jackson’s and ended up purchasing the flower shop. She has owned the store now for almost a year.
“So, here I am and I’m just blessed with this opportunity and trying to run forward with it,” she said.
Jackson’s specializes in floral design for wedding, proms and other special events, any special occasion and funerals.
“I enjoy working with the brides and getting a vibe from them on what they like and their style,” she said.
In addition to floral design, Jackson’s Floral shop has a wide selection of gifts to pair with your flowers.
“I have about three that we’re working with which are the Speckled Bean, Porch Sense candles and Bonafide Birdhouses. I’m hoping to expand a little bit in the future. But I just feel like small local businesses are very very important to the community and so I wanted to bring some of that into the shop,” she said.
Jackson’s Floral History
“It is the oldest florist in Gainesville. It started out as Jackson’s Florist and I believe it was established in 1887. So many many moons ago! I think there’s only one actual living descendant in Gainesville left from the original family.”
