Doyle was the first director of the popular Hall County youth program Young Life. Johnson lived in Hall County since 1977 and loved every minute of it. He was so full of energy with quite the comedic side. He said that if he could describe Gainesville with a song it would be “Life in the Fast Lane,” by the Eagles.
Johnson owned A.D. Mathis, a local store in Gainesville that made custom suits. As a clothier he amassed quite the collection of ties over the years. Johnson was an avid golfer. He loved to play golf at Chattahoochee Golf Club with friends, more specifically, Eddie Hughs, Neal Booth, Stephen Wiseheart, Dick Bachman, Norman Hughs and Doug Magnus.
Johnson said that one of the most interesting people he had the chance to meet in Gainesville was Ed Dodd. For those of you who don’t know, Dodd was the first paid Youth and Physical Education Director for City of Gainesville but more importantly a cartoonist and creator of the famous Mark Trail comic strip. Today Mark Trail is distributed to 175 newspapers by the King Features Syndicate.
Gainesville and Hall County lost a great man this fall. He will be missed by many. His funeral was the best dressed service many have ever seen. It was said that Doyle Jonson was always in the loving people business and he just so happened to clothe people too. Hall County is a better place because of this great man.
