Interview by Abernathy Cochran intern and Gainesville High senior Donangelo Marshall
Meet Scott Barton! Scott is a lifelong Hall County resident and a pharmacist at Riverside Pharmacy in Gainesville. He said he loves the small town feel of Gainesville and seeing people you know around town.
He also shared some big news about Riverside Pharmacy!
“We just purchased this building two weeks ago and I just purchased the lot that is sitting right next to us so our immediate plan within a year or two is to expand our parking lot plus put in a drive through window for the store; which is something that we never had at Riverside,” he said.
Question: What inspired you or led you to your current career?
Answer: “I started working here in 1992 in Riverside Pharmacy and the owner at that time was Wayne Gee whom his son and I are really good friends, we’re actually neighbors now. He encouraged me to try to go to Pharmacy School and I said ‘No’ but he kept on insisting and finally got me into going back to school, then I got in and I started taking the courses and went through; so here I am.”
Q: What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in Hall County and what do you love there?
A: “We just had it the other day, Texas Roadhouse and I love their Chili with cheese.”
Q: How long have you lived or worked in our community?
A: “I lived here my whole life, I graduated from the West Hall High School.”
Q: Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
A: “Jason Buffington, he is in real estate and he was my former pastor.”
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
A: “I’ll always stay in the United States I guess but I’ve always wanted to go to Montana. I loved being outdoors, they’ve got the best honey, and I wanted to see the scenery.”
Q: What is your favorite movie or what is the first movie you remember seeing in the theater?
A: “The first movie I ever saw in one of the drive-in theater here in Gainesville was ‘Grease.’”
Q: What advice would you give to a crowd of people?
A: “The biggest thing that you need to know in life is that Jesus Christ is your savior.”
Q: What is your favorite music or three bands you would like to see (dead or alive)?
A: “I am a country guy so I’ve always wanted to see Alabama, Sally Brown (which probably nobody has heard of this group before) and Montgomery Gentry (which one of them is dead now).”
Q: What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
A: “Green’s Grocery, they’ve been here since the early 50s and still going strong so he’s got a little piece of history of Hall County. I think it’s great that Green’s has done so well especially when there’s big stores like Publix and all that going on now.”
Q: If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
A: “I loved to sit down and talk with the Rev. Billy Graham one day and I’ll take him to my favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse.”
Q: What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
A: “Even though Hall County has really grown for the last 25-30 years, you still have this small town feel and you still see the people who know each other.”
Q: Where do you see yourself in five to 10 years?
A: “In five to 10 years I have no plans of going anywhere but he here at Riverside Pharmacy and I hope we are still thriving as a small independent pharmacy in Hall County.”
Q: What 3 words or phrases that comes to mind when you hear the word “HOME”?
A: “Hall County, Family and Friends.”
Q: If you have a full-time staff member that is fully paid for, who would you choose? Chef, housekeeper, driver, coach, personal fitness trainer or nanny?
A: “Physical Fitness Trainer because I am on a stage of my life where I’m getting older now, 4 years away from 50 and I’m not as active per se as physical activity so it would be nice to have somebody that would push you and make sure keep doing what you needed to do to keep your body in the best shape that you can.”
Q: What are your next plans for the pharmacy for the next few years?
A: “We just purchased this building two weeks ago and I just purchased the lot that is sitting right next to us so our immediate plan within a year or two years is to expand our parking lot plus put in a drive thru window for the store which is something that we never had at Riverside.
“Technology wise…one of the things that a lot of people don’t know is that we have a Pharmacy App that they can download in the App Store or whatever phone they’re using.”
